Mankind . . . possesses two supreme blessings. First of these is the goddess Demeter, or Earth whichever name you choose to call her by. It was she who gave to man his nourishment of grain. But after her there came the son of Semele, who matched her present by inventing liquid wine as his gift to man. For filled with that good gift, suffering mankind forgets its grief; from it comes sleep; with it oblivion of the troubles of the day.
Euripides, Greek Playwright c. 485 - 406 B.C.E.

Island Wines
About four thousand years ago, the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete learned winemaking from the Egyptians. It's fascinating to see pictures of island vineyards - on Santorini, vines are trained in wreaths on the ground to protect them from the sun. White wines from the Greek islands taste intensely fresh and salty, and the unique growing methods produce wines that are higher in acidity. Red wines are generally lighter and more aromatic, though some producers are making powerful wines with an international influence.
White Wine
7. 2011 Douloufakis Enotria White 27
80% Vilana and 20% Sauvignon Blanc done is a fresh, clean style. Refreshing!
8. 2013 Alexakis Vidiano, Crete 30
Vidiano is similar to Viognier, with ripe peach and floral aromas.
9. 2012 Sigalas Assyrtiko / Athiri, Santorini 35
Iconic "Desert Island" wine grown on dry, windswept Santorini. Lemony, citrusy, transporting.
10. 2012 Sigalas Assyrtiko, Santorini 40
The top wine from Sigalas, widely regarded as the best producer on Santorini. A mineral bomb!
Red Wine
11. 2011 Alexakis Syrah-Kotsifali, Crete 32
A lovely, spicy blend from Crete. Native Kotsifali plays Grenache to the Syrah in this Rhone-like red.
Mountain Wines
Inland Greece is a different world from the islands. Characterized by volcanic soils, high altitudes, and long growing seasons, wines from the hillsides and mountainous regions of Greece develop weight and texture. The best sites show a smoky, smoldering power while retaining freshness. If you're a fan of red wines from Red Mountain in Washington or Spring or Howell Mountain in Napa, you'll find a lot to like here.
